The United States uses pounds and ounces. Since 1959 a pound has been exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, and an ounce is one sixteenth of a pound. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, body weight is often given in stone, which is 14 pounds.
Precious metals use their own unit, the troy ounce, which is about 10% heavier than an ordinary ounce. Gemstones are weighed in metric carats of exactly 0.2 grams.
