Metric, US and imperial volumes
The metric system measures volume in liters and milliliters, and larger amounts in cubic meters (1,000 liters). The United States uses its own customary units, from teaspoons and cups up to gallons. The United Kingdom's imperial gallon, pint and fluid ounce have the same names but different sizes.
Be careful with gallons and cooking measures. A US gallon is about 3.785 liters, while an imperial gallon is about 4.546 liters. A US cup is about 236.6 mL, but many recipes outside the US use a metric cup of 250 mL. This converter uses the US sizes for cups, pints, quarts, fluid ounces and spoons.
