Metric and imperial length units
Most of the world measures length in metric units. Millimeters, centimeters, meters and kilometers each differ by a factor of 10 or 1,000, which makes them easy to convert. The United States, and the United Kingdom for some uses, also use imperial units such as inches, feet, yards and miles.
Since 1959 the imperial units have had exact metric definitions. An inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters, a foot is exactly 0.3048 meters and a mile is exactly 1,609.344 meters. This converter uses those exact values, so its results are as precise as the definitions themselves.
