Why temperature needs a formula

Most units can be converted by multiplying by a fixed number. Temperature scales are different, because they start from different zero points. Zero degrees Celsius is where water freezes, while zero degrees Fahrenheit is much colder. That's why converting temperature takes a formula with both a multiplication and an addition.

Celsius is used for weather and cooking in most of the world, with water freezing at 0 °C and boiling at 100 °C. The United States uses Fahrenheit, where water freezes at 32 °F and boils at 212 °F. Scientists use kelvin, which starts at absolute zero, the coldest temperature possible.

Units in this converter

Degree Celsius (°C)
Water freezes at 0 °C and boils at 100 °C at sea level. Used for weather and cooking in most of the world.
Degree Fahrenheit (°F)
Water freezes at 32 °F and boils at 212 °F at sea level. Used for weather and cooking in the United States.
Kelvin (K)
The SI unit of temperature, starting at absolute zero (0 K is −273.15 °C). A change of 1 K equals a change of 1 °C. Used in science.

Frequently asked questions

At what temperature are Celsius and Fahrenheit the same?

At −40 degrees. −40 °C and −40 °F are exactly the same temperature.

What is normal body temperature in Fahrenheit?

About 98.6 °F, which is 37 °C. A normal temperature varies a little from person to person and through the day.

Can I convert temperature by multiplying?

No. The scales have different zero points, so a formula is needed. For example, 20 °C is 68 °F, not 36 °F. You can multiply to convert a temperature difference, though. A rise of 1 °C equals a rise of 1.8 °F.
