How to convert WAV to MP3

  1. 1Drag your WAV files into the box above, or click to choose them.
  2. 2Choose the MP3 quality. 192 kbps suits most music and speech.
  3. 3Click "Convert", then download each MP3 or all of them as a ZIP.

WAV or MP3?

WAV files store sound without compression, which is why recorders, studio software and some voice recorders use them. CD-quality WAV takes about 10.6 MB per minute. MP3 compresses the sound by leaving out details people barely hear, so the same minute takes about 1.4 MB at 192 kbps, around 7 times smaller.

Keep the WAV if you're going to edit the recording further, and use the MP3 for sharing, email, messaging apps and music players. For speech, 128 kbps is plenty; for music, 192 kbps or more.

Frequently asked questions

How much smaller will my file be?

At 192 kbps, a CD-quality WAV becomes about 7 times smaller. At 128 kbps it's about 11 times smaller, and at 320 kbps about 4 times smaller.

Will the MP3 sound worse?

MP3 leaves out sound details that are hard to hear. At 192 kbps or more, most people can't tell it apart from the WAV.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion happens entirely in your web browser, on your own device. Your files are never sent to us or anyone else, so they stay completely private.

Is it really free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many files you convert. The only limit is your device: very large files need more memory.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. It works in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows, Mac and Linux. Very large files may take longer on older phones.
