About M4A files

M4A is Apple's usual audio format. It holds AAC sound, which is high quality for its size, and it's what iPhone Voice Memos, many phone recorders and music downloads use. Most devices play M4A today, but some older players, car stereos and websites still only accept MP3.

Because both formats compress the sound, converting re-encodes it. Choose a bitrate at least as high as the original for the best result. 192 kbps is a good default.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert songs bought on iTunes?

Songs without copy protection, yes. Older copy-protected songs (M4P files) can't be converted by any tool without the right to remove the protection.

Does it work with iPhone voice memos?

Yes. Share the memo to Files or to your computer, then drop the M4A file here.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion happens entirely in your web browser, on your own device. Your files are never sent to us or anyone else, so they stay completely private.

Is it really free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many files you convert. The only limit is your device: very large files need more memory.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. It works in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows, Mac and Linux. Very large files may take longer on older phones.
