MOV, MP4 and HEVC
MOV is Apple's video format, and MP4 is the most widely supported one. They're close relatives, so when a MOV already contains H.264 video, the tool simply repackages it as MP4. That takes seconds and loses no quality.
iPhones usually record in HEVC (H.265), which saves space but doesn't play everywhere. Those videos are re-encoded to H.264, the format every device and website plays. Re-encoding takes longer, roughly as long as the video or less on a recent device, because it uses your device's video hardware.
Reading HEVC needs support from your browser and device. Safari on Apple devices has it, and so do Chrome and Edge on most recent computers and phones. If yours can't read the video, the tool tells you so.

Frequently asked questions
Will the MP4 lose quality?
If the video only needs repackaging, not at all. If it's re-encoded from HEVC, the tool keeps a high quality, so the difference is very hard to see.
Why is the MP4 bigger than my MOV?
HEVC packs video more tightly than H.264, so the same video in H.264 is often larger. That's the price of playing everywhere. Use "Compress video" if you need a smaller file.
How long does it take?
Repackaging takes seconds. Re-encoding depends on your device and the video's length and resolution.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion happens entirely in your web browser, on your own device. Your files are never sent to us or anyone else, so they stay completely private.
Is it really free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many files you convert. The only limit is your device: very large files need more memory.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. It works in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows, Mac and Linux. Very large files may take longer on older phones.
