How to compress a video

How to get the smallest video
Phones record at high resolution and bitrate, so their videos are large. Lowering the resolution saves the most. A 1080p video reduced to 720p has less than half the pixels, and it still looks sharp on a phone screen. The compression setting then decides how much detail is kept in each frame.
The result is an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound, which plays everywhere. The sound is kept as it is when possible. If a video is already well compressed and can't get smaller, you get your original back instead of a bigger file.

How much smaller will my video be?
It depends on the video. Phone videos reduced to 720p with the balanced setting often shrink to a third of their size or less.
Does compressing reduce quality?
Some detail is lost, as with any video compression. "Balanced" is hard to tell apart on a phone; choose "Better quality" if you plan to watch on a big screen.
Can I compress long videos?
Yes. The video is read in pieces, so even large files work. Long videos take longer, depending on your device.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion happens entirely in your web browser, on your own device. Your files are never sent to us or anyone else, so they stay completely private.
Is it really free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many files you convert. The only limit is your device: very large files need more memory.
Does it work on my phone?
