What is a HEIC file?

HEIC (also called HEIF) is the photo format iPhones and iPads use by default. It stores photos at high quality in about half the space of a JPG, which saves storage on your phone.

The downside is compatibility. Many Windows programs, older apps, websites and printing services can't open HEIC files. JPG works almost everywhere, so converting makes your photos easy to share, upload and print.

Your photos are converted on your own device. Personal photos never leave your phone or computer, which matters for pictures of family, documents or your home.

Your files stay private

This tool runs entirely in your browser. Your files are never uploaded to a server, so nobody else can see them, not even us.Read our privacy policy

Frequently asked questions

Will my photos lose quality?

JPG uses lossy compression, but at the default 90% quality the difference isn't visible in normal viewing. Choose a higher quality if you plan to edit or print the photos.

Why is the JPG bigger than the HEIC file?

HEIC compresses photos about twice as efficiently as JPG, so the same photo takes more space as a JPG. That's normal.

Are Live Photos and bursts supported?

The main still image is converted. The video part of a Live Photo and extra burst frames are not included.

Is photo information (EXIF) kept?

No. Metadata such as the camera model, date and GPS location is removed, so you can share the JPG without revealing where the photo was taken. Photos are rotated the right way up.

How can I stop my iPhone from taking HEIC photos?

On your iPhone, open Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. New photos will be saved as JPG.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion happens entirely in your web browser, on your own device. Your files are never sent to us or anyone else, so they stay completely private.

Is it really free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many files you convert. The only limit is your device: very large files need more memory.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. It works in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows, Mac and Linux. Very large files may take longer on older phones.
