About CSV and JSON
CSV (comma-separated values) is the simplest way to store a table, and every spreadsheet app can export it. JSON is the format websites, apps and APIs use to exchange data, so converting CSV to JSON is a common step when bringing spreadsheet data into software.
Each row of your CSV becomes an object, with the column names as keys. The separator (comma, semicolon or tab) is detected automatically, and numbers and true/false values become real JSON values. Values like 007, or ID numbers too long for JavaScript to store exactly, stay as text, so nothing changes by accident.
CSV files exported from older versions of Excel on Windows are often not saved as UTF-8. The converter notices this and reads them in the usual encoding for your language. If letters still look scrambled, choose the encoding yourself.

Frequently asked questions
What happens to the first row?
With "First row has column names" ticked, the first row provides the keys and every other row becomes an object. Untick it to get a list of lists instead, which keeps every row exactly as it is.
Which separators are supported?
Commas, semicolons, tabs and vertical bars are detected automatically, so CSV files from European versions of Excel, which use semicolons, work too.
Why do some numbers stay in quotes?
To avoid changing your data. Numbers with a leading zero, such as postcodes or 007, and ID numbers longer than about 15 digits stay as text, because turning them into numbers would drop the zero or change the last digits.
My Arabic or accented letters look scrambled. What can I do?
The file was probably saved in an older encoding. Choose it under Text encoding, for example Arabic (Windows-1256), and convert again.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion happens entirely in your web browser, on your own device. Your files are never sent to us or anyone else, so they stay completely private.
Is it really free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many files you convert. The only limit is your device: very large files need more memory.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. It works in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows, Mac and Linux. Very large files may take longer on older phones.
